A calculation is only as useful as the entries inside it. If you use a specific jar of sauce, cheese, bread, or plant milk, the package label usually matches that product better than a generic result. There are exceptions. If you drain fat, discard cooking liquid, leave sauce in the pan, remove bones, or strain part of the dish, some material included in the original calculation is not eaten. Adjust the ingredient record when the difference is large enough to matter.
Not every pinch needs equal attention. Focus first on ingredients that are calorie-dense, used in meaningful amounts, or easy to overlook:
Spices, herbs, water, and very small amounts of low-calorie ingredients rarely deserve the same effort. Include them when they matter to the recipe or nutrients you track, but do not let a gram of parsley become the reason you abandon the log.
Calories per gram works best when each scoop has roughly the same composition. It is less reliable when the dish contains distinct pieces or layers—pizza, stuffed vegetables, chicken with sauce, a tray bake, or a casserole with a heavy cheese layer.

For leftovers, keep the calories-per-gram value from the finished batch and weigh each portion as you eat it. Reheating may change the food’s weight slightly through moisture loss, but the saved estimate remains a practical baseline. If someone eats from the pot without weighing, record the remaining batch weight when possible and treat the missing amount as their portion.
